Leading Beyond the Algorithm: Five Human Capabilities Women in STEM Need in the AI Era
The technology worked. The business case was strong. The potential efficiencies were compelling.
Yet, during my years as an IT Director leading technology-driven transformation, I learned that none of these could guarantee successful change.
The deciding factor was people.
When organizations prioritize the human side of change, people are more likely to understand the purpose, participate in the journey, and adopt new ways of working.
When they do not, even an excellent technical solution can struggle to deliver its intended value.
This lesson feels especially important as organizations accelerate their use of artificial intelligence.
AI may change how we analyze information, solve problems, serve customers, and make decisions. But people will determine whether that transformation creates trust, inclusion, and meaningful progress.

For women in STEM, this moment presents more than a need to adapt.
It presents an opportunity to influence how the future of work is designed.
Here are five human capabilities that can help women lead beyond the algorithm.
1. Learning agility
AI fluency is becoming part of leadership fluency.
Leaders do not need to become experts in every emerging technology. They do need enough understanding to ask informed questions, evaluate opportunities, recognize risks, and guide their teams through change.
Learning agility also gives others permission to learn.
A leader who can say, “I do not know yet, but I am committed to understanding,” models curiosity rather than fear.
Ask yourself: What is one aspect of AI that I need to understand more clearly to lead my team responsibly?
2. Human judgment
AI can identify patterns, organize information, and generate possible answers.
It cannot assume responsibility for the consequences of a leadership decision.
Human judgement is needed to consider context, ethics, organizational values, unintended effects, and the experiences of people who may be affected differently.
The question is not only, “Can we use AI to do this?” Leaders must also ask, “Should we, under what conditions, and for whose benefit?”
3. Curiosity
In periods of rapid change, leaders may feel pressure to appear certain. Yet curiosity can be more valuable than having an immediate answer.
Curious leaders ask:
What problem are we truly trying to solve?
What assumptions are shaping this decision?
What perspectives have we not considered?
What could we learn through a thoughtful experiment?
Curiosity opens the door to innovation while helping teams identify risks before they become costly problems.
4. Trust-building communication
People cannot embrace a transformation they do not understand or trust.
Leaders must communicate more than what is changing. They must explain why it matters, how decisions are being made, what remains uncertain, and how employees will be supported.
Trust grows through consistency, transparency, listening, and follow-through.
Inclusive communication also creates room for people to express questions without being labelled as resistant to change.
Sometimes, a concern is not resistance. It is valuable information waiting to be heard.
5. Inclusive influence
Women need opportunities to shape AI strategy, not merely adapt to decisions made elsewhere.
This means involving women in the conversations where organizations define AI priorities, select solutions, evaluate risks, establish governance, and measure success.
It also means recognizing that presence alone is not the same as influence.
Women need equal opportunities to contribute, challenge assumptions, lead strategic initiatives, and affect final decisions.
Inclusive AI transformation asks not only who will use the technology, but also who is helping to design the future it will create.
My practical LEAD approach
I recommend four actions for organizations navigating AI transformation:
Learn continuously
Create accessible opportunities for leaders and employees to build AI knowledge through learning, experimentation, and shared reflection.
Evaluate with judgment
Consider business value alongside ethics, risk, human impact, organizational values, and long-term consequences.
Amplify diverse voices
Invite perspectives from people with different roles, identities, disciplines, experiences, and levels of authority.
Design change with people
Involve employees early enough to influence the transformation, not only after the major decisions have already been made.
AI transformation is not simply a technology initiative. It is a leadership journey.
Organizations that combine technological capability with human wisdom will be better positioned to build trust, unlock innovation, and create progress that people can see themselves participating in.
For women in STEM, this is our opportunity to do more than prepare for the future.
It is our opportunity to help shape it.
